A History of the Organization Categories...
In early 2007 Amma Aboagye '08 brought up an issue that had long been on everyone's minds in the black student community at one of the BSU delegate's meetings. She articulated that while we have so many amazing groups and programs to put on within our diverse community we are not facilitating programming in the most efficient way possible. Often we run into the issue of overprogramming, or double programming where the same event is put on twice by two different groups. In order to cut down on this, BSU has decided to step in and assist organizations in working properly with one another. Through the BSU calendar and monthly delegates meetings, organization leaders have the opportunity to display when their events will be taking place and dialogue about their programming ideas. In addition and with much thanks to Amma, we have divided all the groups underneath our umbrella into sub categories to make it easier for groups to recognize which other organizations have similar missions. This model should encourage the leaders within the cultural groups for example to dialogue more frequently about when and how their events will be facilitated. Additionally we hope to put into place an auditing system in which we examine in depth the effectiveness of certain programs and realistically explore whether certain programs should be continued.
